However, the United States government’s increased reliance and dependency on private military firms has not been without controversy. In fact, the lack of accountability that has allowed certain sectors of the private military industry to act with impunity have arguably complicated the U.S. military’s already difficult missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.</div> <ul class="links inline list-inline"><li class="node-readmore"><a href="/jrnl/art/assessment-private-military-industry-and-its-role-iraq-and-afghanistan-wars" rel="tag" title="An Assessment of the Private Military Industry and its Role in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars" hreflang="en">Read more<span class="visually-hidden"> about An Assessment of the Private Military Industry and its Role in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars</span></a></li><li class="comment-comments"><a href="/jrnl/art/assessment-private-military-industry-and-its-role-iraq-and-afghanistan-wars#comments" title="Jump to the first comment." hreflang="en">1 comment</a></li><li class="comment-new-comments"><a href="/taxonomy/term/287/feed" class="hidden" title="Jump to the first new comment." data-history-node-last-comment-timestamp="1674280109" data-history-node-field-name="comment"></a></li><li class="comment-forbidden"></li><li></li></ul> Mon, 05 Aug 2019 04:49:38 +0000 SWJED 123630 at http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com Options for U.S. Use of Private Military and Security Companies http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/options-us-use-private-military-and-security-companies <article data-history-node-id="123342" role="article" class="article teaser clearfix"> <h2> <a href="/index.php/jrnl/art/options-us-use-private-military-and-security-companies" rel="bookmark"><span>Options for U.S. Use of Private Military and Security Companies</span> </a> </h2> <footer> <article> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="masquerade.callbacks:renderCacheLink" arguments="0=4" token="2JcDkyvoNdz7AbcUTZXDTgfSvABuLH-TUc0jYOzfCs0"></drupal-render-placeholder></article> <div class="author"> <span>Mon, 07/15/2019 - 11:58am</span> </div> </footer> <div class="content"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item">This article is published as part of the Small Wars Journal and Divergent Options Writing Contest which ran from March 1, 2019 to May 31, 2019. From research and development, acquisitions, consulting, intelligence, cyber, logistics, and information technology, there are myriad ways the private sector makes valuable contributions that advance U.S. national security policy goals and keep Americans safe. But there are also many problems with how these operational support contracts are executed on the ground, which various U.S. government agencies have acknowledged for years. Unfortunately, the model the U.S.-led coalition is relying on for employing contractors in Afghanistan remains rife with poor accountability, ineffectiveness, and fundamental strategic communications issues.</div> <ul class="links inline list-inline"><li class="node-readmore"><a href="/jrnl/art/contractors-afghanistan-are-fleecing-american-taxpayer" rel="tag" title="Contractors in Afghanistan are Fleecing the American Taxpayer" hreflang="en">Read more<span class="visually-hidden"> about Contractors in Afghanistan are Fleecing the American Taxpayer</span></a></li><li class="comment-comments"><a href="/jrnl/art/contractors-afghanistan-are-fleecing-american-taxpayer#comments" title="Jump to the first comment." hreflang="en">1 comment</a></li><li class="comment-new-comments"><a href="/taxonomy/term/287/feed" class="hidden" title="Jump to the first new comment." data-history-node-last-comment-timestamp="1576735710" data-history-node-field-name="comment"></a></li><li class="comment-forbidden"></li><li></li></ul> Tue, 19 Feb 2019 12:36:32 +0000 SWJED 115317 at http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com Should We Send Armed Contractors to Syria? http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/should-we-send-armed-contractors-syria <article data-history-node-id="113859" role="article" class="article teaser clearfix"> <h2> <a href="/index.php/jrnl/art/should-we-send-armed-contractors-syria" rel="bookmark"><span>Should We Send Armed Contractors to Syria?</span> </a> </h2> <footer> <article> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="masquerade.callbacks:renderCacheLink" arguments="0=4" token="2JcDkyvoNdz7AbcUTZXDTgfSvABuLH-TUc0jYOzfCs0"></drupal-render-placeholder></article> <div class="author"> <span>Mon, 01/28/2019 - 3:21pm</span> </div> </footer> <div class="content"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item">Should we replace American forces in Syria with armed contractors?
