The 19th century master of military theory, Carl von Clausewitz, first introduced the concept in his unfinished manuscript published after his death. It remained largely unknown, like old papyrus, until it was poorly translated to English and resurrected in Western military theory in the 1980’s as THE key for victory! Since then it has taken on the status of military theory’s ‘Holy Grail’ and fueled countless quests for truth and understanding.</div> <ul class="links inline list-inline"><li class="node-readmore"><a href="/jrnl/art/center-gravity-what-we-can-learn-spanish-televisions-casa-de-papel" rel="tag" title="Center of Gravity: What We Can Learn From Spanish Television’s Casa de Papel" hreflang="en">Read more<span class="visually-hidden"> about Center of Gravity: What We Can Learn From Spanish Television’s Casa de Papel</span></a></li><li class="comment-comments"><a href="/jrnl/art/center-gravity-what-we-can-learn-spanish-televisions-casa-de-papel#comments" title="Jump to the first comment." hreflang="en">3 comments</a></li><li class="comment-new-comments"><a href="/taxonomy/term/515/feed" class="hidden" title="Jump to the first new comment." data-history-node-last-comment-timestamp="1632478402" data-history-node-field-name="comment"></a></li><li class="comment-forbidden"></li><li></li></ul> Tue, 14 Apr 2020 15:01:51 +0000 SWJED 137854 at http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com Even Amorphous Systems Have Centers of Gravity http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/even-amorphous-systems-have-centers-gravity <article data-history-node-id="120784" role="article" class="article teaser clearfix"> <h2> <a href="/jrnl/art/even-amorphous-systems-have-centers-gravity" rel="bookmark"><span>Even Amorphous Systems Have Centers of Gravity</span> </a> </h2> <footer> <article> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="masquerade.callbacks:renderCacheLink" arguments="0=4" token="2JcDkyvoNdz7AbcUTZXDTgfSvABuLH-TUc0jYOzfCs0"></drupal-render-placeholder></article> <div class="author"> <span>Sat, 05/18/2019 - 3:05am</span> </div> </footer> <div class="content"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item">Can an amorphous system characterized by low hierarchy, dispersal, and decentralization have a Center of Gravity (CoG)? I say, “Yes,” because the purpose of the system determines the CoG, not the structure. However, to many theorists the answer is a resounding no, because the system’s structure is the determinate. They claim a system must be concentrated and centralized to have a targetable CoG. Both answers have compelling arguments.
