Coupling old school concepts with modern capabilities can vastly improve effectiveness: the Civil War did not have dedicated special operations forces to emplace landmines, open-source imagery to easily map a country’s entire rail network, network analysis techniques and tools to identify strategic chokepoints, and modern long-range fires from rocket artillery to drones and aircraft for follow-up strikes on fixed trains and military engineers. Anti-rail landmines should not only serve US operators, but could be provided to allied nations.</div> <ul class="links inline list-inline"><li class="node-readmore"><a href="/jrnl/art/bring-back-anti-rail-landmine" rel="tag" title="Bring Back the Anti-Rail Landmine" hreflang="en">Read more<span class="visually-hidden"> about Bring Back the Anti-Rail Landmine</span></a></li><li class="comment-comments"><a href="/jrnl/art/bring-back-anti-rail-landmine#comments" title="Jump to the first comment." hreflang="en">2 comments</a></li><li class="comment-new-comments"><a href="/taxonomy/term/780/feed" class="hidden" title="Jump to the first new comment." data-history-node-last-comment-timestamp="1661338672" data-history-node-field-name="comment"></a></li><li class="comment-forbidden"></li><li></li></ul> Mon, 25 Jul 2022 21:44:00 +0000 ZFTWARNING 141012 at http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com Responding to Gray Zone Conflict: Countering Russia in the Donbas and Beyond http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/responding-gray-zone-conflict-countering-russia-donbas-and-beyond <span>Responding to Gray Zone Conflict: Countering Russia in the Donbas and Beyond</span> <span><span>Riley.C.Murray</span></span> <span>Mon, 06/07/2021 - 1:38pm</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item">U.S. defense planning is hampered by a binary conception of peace and war. An effective response will require a more nuanced approach. Specifically, it will require the U.S. and its allies and partners to better equip Ukrainian forces for both kinetic and non-kinetic operations. The latter must focus on denying the opposition force, in this case Russia, the ability to remain in the Gray Zone.</div> <ul class="links inline list-inline"><li class="node-readmore"><a href="/jrnl/art/responding-gray-zone-conflict-countering-russia-donbas-and-beyond" rel="tag" title="Responding to Gray Zone Conflict: Countering Russia in the Donbas and Beyond" hreflang="en">Read more<span class="visually-hidden"> about Responding to Gray Zone Conflict: Countering Russia in the Donbas and Beyond</span></a></li><li class="comment-comments"><a href="/jrnl/art/responding-gray-zone-conflict-countering-russia-donbas-and-beyond#comments" title="Jump to the first comment." hreflang="en">1 comment</a></li><li class="comment-new-comments"><a href="/taxonomy/term/780/feed" class="hidden" title="Jump to the first new comment." data-history-node-last-comment-timestamp="1632314199" data-history-node-field-name="comment"></a></li><li class="comment-forbidden"></li><li></li></ul> Mon, 07 Jun 2021 17:38:44 +0000 Riley.C.Murray 139609 at http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com Placing Putin’s Pragmatism in Perspective http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/placing-putins-pragmatism-perspective <article data-history-node-id="112136" role="article" class="article teaser clearfix"> <h2> <a href="/jrnl/art/placing-putins-pragmatism-perspective" rel="bookmark"><span>Placing Putin’s Pragmatism in Perspective</span> </a> </h2> <footer> <article> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="masquerade.callbacks:renderCacheLink" arguments="0=4" token="2JcDkyvoNdz7AbcUTZXDTgfSvABuLH-TUc0jYOzfCs0"></drupal-render-placeholder></article> <div class="author"> <span>Wed, 01/02/2019 - 7:03am</span> </div> </footer> <div class="content"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item">In this essay, the author describes and evaluates Putin's pragmatism, explains that this pragmatism grew increasingly assertive over time due to Western encroachments in the Former Soviet Union, and concludes that the crisis in Ukraine shows this strategy has provided significant payoffs for Russia.</div> <ul class="links inline list-inline"><li class="node-readmore"><a href="/jrnl/art/placing-putins-pragmatism-perspective" rel="tag" title="Placing Putin’s Pragmatism in Perspective" hreflang="en">Read more<span class="visually-hidden"> about Placing Putin’s Pragmatism in Perspective</span></a></li><li class="comment-forbidden"></li><li></li></ul> <h2>About the Author(s)</h2> <div class="views-element-container form-group"></div> </div> </article> Wed, 02 Jan 2019 12:03:15 +0000 SWJED 112136 at http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com Why Russia's Seizure of Ukrainian Vessels Matters to the U.S. http://archive.smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/why-russias-seizure-ukrainian-vessels-matters-us <article data-history-node-id="111140" role="article" class="article teaser clearfix"> <h2> <a href="/jrnl/art/why-russias-seizure-ukrainian-vessels-matters-us" rel="bookmark"><span>Why Russia&#039;s Seizure of Ukrainian Vessels Matters to the U.S.</span> </a> </h2> <footer> <article> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="masquerade.callbacks:renderCacheLink" arguments="0=4" token="2JcDkyvoNdz7AbcUTZXDTgfSvABuLH-TUc0jYOzfCs0"></drupal-render-placeholder></article> <div class="author"> <span>Sun, 12/09/2018 - 7:46pm</span> </div> </footer> <div class="content"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item">Russia is counting on the United States and its allies to calculate that supporting Ukraine with additional lethal and non-lethal aid exposes them to unacceptably high risk of escalation with Russia.
