"'China is far away from democracy,...Right now, China is experiencing a peaceful transformation,' Zhang Kai said, a Beijing lawyer and activist in an unauthorized Christian church who is running as an independent." This, I believe is the ultimate future of China. Yes, it is a peaceful transformation, predominately being generated by an ever evolving Christian evolution in China. However, the Chinese leadership, call them what you will, whether moderate communists or moderate nationalists, are still in charge. With that said, they will not tolerate groups who try and force an excelerated push towards democracy. This was tried in Tienaman Square and was met with violent blowback from Deng Xioping and the Party leadership. But it was the visionary Deng who lead the Chinese to a more "invisible hand" type free market evolving economy that China is today. It is a slow, methodical, peaceful evolution though, that only needs to transpire the way they envision it. To a certain extent, the government is like a parent, that when the child, the people, messes up, they get into trouble ("teaching a lesson"). The Chinese are also wise, they saw the disintegration of the USSR and they will not make the same mistake. They will protect the ever evolving Chinese culture from going to fast, and do embrace the "peaceful transformation" as the Christian Zhang Kai has eluded to. Eric Liddell would be proud to see what is going on in China today.
