Israeli military jets began striking targets in the Gaza Strip on Monday in response to rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave, just as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was meeting at the White House with President Trump.
The airstrikes came hours after a rocket attack hit a family house near Tel Aviv, injuring seven Israelis and prompting Netanyahu to announce he was cutting short his visit to Washington after finishing his meeting with the president.
“Israel will not tolerate this. I will not tolerate this,” Netanyahu said of the rocket attack. “As we speak Israel is responding forcefully to this wanton aggression.”
Netanyahu, who is in the midst of a fierce battle for reelection with Israelis going to the polls in less than 15 days, was also scheduled to give a keynote address at the annual AIPAC policy forum conference Tuesday morning and participate in a celebratory state dinner with Trump at the White House Tuesday evening.
During Netanyahu’s visit, Trump signed a proclamation officially granting U.S. recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory. Israel captured the strategic heights from Syria in he 1967 war.
In a short video clip from Washington, Netanyahu called the rocket fire “a criminal attack.” …
