Retired Army Colonel David Maxwell Named Senior Fellow for North Korea Policy at Foundation for Defense of Democracies
Former Army Special Forces Colonel brings more than 20 years of service in Asia to FDD
(Washington, D.C., Aug. 13, 2018) – David Maxwell, a 30-year veteran of the United States Army and former Special Forces Colonel, has joined Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) as a Senior Fellow specializing in North Korea and East Asia affairs.
Maxwell, who retired from the Army in 2011, served in various command and staff assignments in Korea, Japan and the Philippines, with total service in Asia of more than 20 years. During his five tours in Korea, he co-authored the plan for North Korean instability and regime collapse. His final assignment was teaching national security strategy at the National War College. After leaving the army, he served as Associate Director of the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University.
“We are thrilled to have David join our team,” said Jonathan Schanzer, senior vice president for research at FDD. “He knows the DMZ. He knows the Pentagon. He knows Washington and academia. It’s rare to find someone with David’s experience. He joins us at a crucial time, particularly as the North Korea issue heats up.”
Maxwell is a member of the Board of Directors of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK), the International Council of Korean Studies (ICKS), the Council of U.S. Korean Security Studies (CUSKOSS), the Special Operations Association, and the OSS Society.
In addition to providing analysis on North Korea and East Asian affairs, Maxwell will work with experts from FDD’s project on Cyber Enabled Economic Warfare (CEEW) and its Center on Sanctions and Illicit Finance (CSIF).
