It’s no secret that the world’s population is on the move, but it’s rare to get a glimpse of where that flow is happening. In a study released in today’s Science, a team of geographers used data snapshots to create a broad analysis of global migrations over 20 years.
The study was conducted by three geographic researchers from the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital in Vienna. The researchers presented their data in five-year increments, from 1990 to 2010. Interesting graphic, if confusing.
There are a couple of key points for the SWC community and I have yet to read my copy of David Kilcullen's latest book.
1. Multi-ethnic movement to cities and urban areas on a scale not seen for a long time. London is not often cited as being having 40% of its population not born in the UK.
2. Such 'new comer' communities greatly vary in composition. Some like the labourers in the Gulf are single sex and temporary. The Russian oligarchs in London are investors and in relatively small numbers compared to the 500k French who are here to work.
3. The potential for conflict between the 'new comers' in the cities, often the capital city, and the longer established communities that make up the the majority in the hinterland.
