يكون استخدام السلك باتباع الخطوات الآتية: فتح خزانة التمديدات الخاصة بحوض المطبخ، ووضع دلو أسفل الأنابيب لالتقاط الماء المتساقط منها. فك الأنبوب المنحني على شكل قوس، والموجود عند نقطة التقاء الأنبوب الموصول بشكلٍ عمودي والأنبوب الموصول بشكلٍ أفقي، حيث يشار إلى أنّه يمكن فك هذه الأنابيب باستخدام اليدين أو باستخدام مفتاح الربط. تنظيف الأنبوب من الماء أو الأوساخ العالقة فيه والتي تسببت بتسكير الحوض. سكب الماء الساخن في الحوض والتأكد من أنّ العملية تمّت بنجاح بعد وصل الأنبوب، ويشار إلى أنّه في حال فشل العملية فيجب فك الأنابيب الأفقية، ومحاولة تسليك الفتحة الموجودة داخل الحائط من خلال إدخال سلكٍ بطول 46 سنتيمتر فيها للتخلص من الأوساخ العالقة. سكب الماء الساخن مرةً أخرى في الأنابيب للتأكّد من أنّها فتحت بشكلٍ كامل
